Our Windows into the Past

We recently discovered that our three Stained glass windows are 100 years old this year. We thought you may be interested in what we found recorded. After carrying out some research from the Kirk Session minutes of 1925 we found the following extracts:

Extract of minute on 20 April 1925

“It was also agreed that the unveiling of the War Memorial Window be on 31st May three o’clock in the afternoon and no forenoon service. To be duly intimated from the pulpit. It was also agreed to invite all the Churches in the town and the various bodies in the town to be represented. Copies of the War Memorial service to be printed. The Moderator reported that he had invited the Very Rev George Milligan, DCL DD (Moderator of Church of Scotland 1923), Professor of Biblical Criticism of Glasgow University to dedicate the Memorials and the Rev Robert Coupar BD of Linlithgow and Rev David Baird UF Church Armadale would also be part of the service.”

Extract of minute of 13 July 1925

“Letter from the secretary of Woman’s Guild was read and considered. It was agreed to intimate that the Church would be open for a few weeks from 4 to 5 pm to give the public an opportunity to inspect the War Memorial window.

Clerk was instructed to write the British and Foreign Glass Coy, 137 Howard Street, Glasgow to express our appreciation of the three stained glass windows they executed for us. Namely War Memorial and Mr Forsyth’s Memorials. The design and colourings are beautiful. They have been much admired and have given us entire satisfaction. Also, to Dickie and Son, 70 Mitchell Street, Glasgow to express our appreciation of the Mural Tablet which you designed and executed for our War Memorial. The tablet has been much admired and has given much satisfaction.”
